The lack of data available on air freight is a key barrier to incorporating freight into aviation policy modelling, so we have been looking as part of the ATSlab’s ToZCA project at how this can be overcome. By combining global and regional data sources, including ADS-B, fleet, schedule and trade data, we’ve been able to generate an integrated global database of air freight supply and demand – see our new paper here (or on our publications page). The data show that freight journeys are complex and diverse, covering longer distances with more stops than the typical passenger journey, with strongly different mixes of commodities carried on different route groups – all things that will affect how freight responds to policy and to the net zero transition. This is an active area of ATSlab research, so watch this space for more!
